Choosing an air source heat pump starts with your home’s heat loss, hot-water needs and available installation space. This desk-based comparison brings together manufacturer information and practical checks for ten brands. We have not carried out comparative laboratory testing or a reliability study. Use it to shortlist systems and prepare questions for your installer, including expected running costs.

For noise, ask for the exact model’s sound-power data and a site assessment: sound-pressure readings depend on distance, surroundings and operating mode.

The ten brands below are an editorial shortlist, not a measured ranking of reliability or customer service. Their ranges span different generations and system types, so compare the exact model codes on your quotations.

The Vaillant aroTHERM Plus uses R290 refrigerant. Vaillant’s earlier-generation literature lists several output sizes and a headline SCOP of up to 5.03. The brand also markets a newer aroTHERM Plus generation, so ask which model is quoted and use its own data sheet. Our sizing guide explains why nominal output alone is not enough.

Vaillant’s aroTHERM Plus product information describes heating flow temperatures up to 75°C and use with radiators or underfloor heating. That maximum is not a recommended everyday setting. Ask your installer to calculate radiator output and efficiency at the proposed design temperature.

The Daikin Altherma 3 H HT F combines an outdoor unit with a floor-standing indoor unit and integrated hot-water tank. Its UK page lists operation down to −28°C and domestic hot water up to 65°C. These are different specifications: neither establishes the heating output available on your coldest design day or proves superiority over another brand.

Daikin publishes efficiency per model, so compare SCOP at the same flow temperature. Its current UK warranty page states two years as standard, a free extension to five years through Stand By Me, and a paid extension to seven years for eligible Sustainable Home Expert installations. Annual maintenance and registration conditions apply.

Mitsubishi Electric offers Ecodan air source systems and an installer network. Its residential range page includes R290 products alongside other configurations. Check the outdoor-unit code and matching cylinder or controls in your quote. We do not have comparable installation-volume or failure-rate evidence to call Ecodan the most installed or most reliable UK brand.

Ecodan performance and warranty depend on the proposed model and installer. Mitsubishi’s residential warranty page offers up to seven years through its Business Solutions Partners. Ask your installer to confirm your entitlement, registration and servicing obligations.

Worcester Bosch’s Compress 5800i AW range includes 4, 5 and 7kW models using R290 refrigerant. The manufacturer publishes model-specific performance and installation requirements. Those figures should not be applied to every Compress product or used as a substitute for a heat-loss survey.

Worcester Bosch publishes heat-pump guarantees of up to seven years, depending on installer qualifications and loyalty status. Its twelve-year offer is for qualifying gas boilers. Ask your installer to confirm the heat-pump guarantee, registration requirements and service conditions in writing.

Grant offers the Aerona3 R32 alongside its newer Aerona 290 range. For the R32 models, Grant’s current specification table lists SCOP at 35°C from 4.54 to 5.40, with the 13kW model at 5.40. Compare the model proposed for your home, rather than using the range’s highest figure for every installation.

The total cost of a Grant installation depends on the design and work included. Get an itemised quote before making a value comparison. Grant offers seven-year guarantees through G1 installers who meet its heat-pump training requirements, subject to its terms.

Samsung’s EHS Mono HT Quiet is worth considering where siting noise matters, but its headline figure does not prove it is the quietest UK heat pump. Samsung’s UK launch information gives 35 dB(A), measured three metres from the unit in an anechoic room at 7°C outdoors. Actual sound depends on operating conditions and installation. Check radiator sizing even when choosing a high-temperature model.

Samsung’s wider EHS range includes different refrigerants and generations. Confirm the product code rather than assuming every EHS unit has the HT Quiet specifications. Ask the installer who handles servicing, fault diagnosis and warranty claims; company-wide electronics reviews do not establish the quality of heat-pump aftercare.

NIBE’s current F2050 page lists F2050-6, -10, -12 and -16 variants and describes operation down to −20°C. It specifically identifies the -6 and -10 as Quiet Mark certified. The page describes S-Series controls and myUplink connectivity. An eight-kilowatt minimum is not a valid reason to exclude this range from smaller homes; suitability still depends on the design.

NIBE offers seven-year parts-and-labour cover through qualifying NIBE Pro installers. Registration, annual servicing and installation conditions apply. Check which local company will maintain the system and handle a claim before choosing an installer.

LG’s Therma V range includes models with a low-noise mode. Its published 32 dB(A) example for the R32 Silent Monobloc is sound pressure at five metres in low-noise mode. That is not directly comparable with Samsung’s three-metre test or Vaillant’s sound-power figure. Ask for UK specifications for the exact model and an assessment of the proposed location.

Ask an LG installer for the complete fitted price and written warranty terms for the proposed model. Confirm registration deadlines, maintenance requirements and whether parts, labour and call-outs are included. The Hitachi Yutaki name covers several system configurations. We could not verify a current UK primary-source specification for the S80 during this review, so we do not use its earlier temperature, output or COP claims to recommend it over another model. How Do Air Source Heat Pumps Work?

Air source heat pumps work by extracting heat from the outside air and concentrating it through a refrigerant cycle to heat your home and your hot water. There is usable heat energy in the air even below freezing; the compressor raises it to a useful temperature and the system delivers it through radiators or underfloor heating.

SCOP describes seasonal heat output relative to electrical input under defined test conditions. A SCOP of 4 represents four units of heat for each unit of electricity across that test season. It is not a promise of household performance. Compare the same climate rating and flow temperature, and distinguish SCOP from COP measured at a single operating point.

Types of Heat Pump: Air-to-Water, Air-to-Air and Ground Source

Every unit in this guide is an air-to-water heat pump – the type of heat pump that heats radiators and a hot water cylinder, and what most UK buyers mean by ASHP. Eligible air-to-water installations can receive BUS support in England and Wales; the amount depends on the property and heating being replaced.

An air-to-air heat pump instead blows warm air straight into rooms, like an air conditioning unit running in reverse. It is cheaper to install but cannot heat water, and it attracts a lower £2,500 BUS grant. A ground source heat pump extracts heat from buried collector loops rather than the outside air – more efficient in deep winter, but the groundworks push installation costs well above air source, with BUS support available for eligible installations.

Air Source Heat Pump Installation: Costs and What to Check

Installation cost depends on the heat-loss survey, system design and work required. Bedroom count alone is not enough to size or price a system. Ask for a fixed, itemised quotation with exclusions and any grant deduction stated separately.

Use an MCS-certified installer and check the current BUS eligibility and application requirements before signing. Your survey should identify any radiator upgrades, cylinder replacement and electrical work. Ask whether these are included, and who pays if the design changes after the quote.

The right shortlist depends on your heat-loss survey, installation space, local support and itemised quotations. An older home does not automatically need the hottest available heat pump. Best for Older Houses with Existing Radiators

Ask for a room-by-room heat-loss calculation and a check of radiator output at the proposed flow temperature. Some existing radiators can remain; others may need enlarging. A high maximum water temperature does not guarantee that no upgrades are needed, and running hotter can reduce efficiency. Options to discuss include:

However, the minimum operating temperature is only part of the story. Two practical factors matter more for real-world cold-weather efficiency:

• Heating capacity: ask for output at the local design temperature and proposed water temperature, including any use of backup heating. A nominal rating at a milder test point is not sufficient.
• Defrost allowance: ask how the design accounts for defrost operation in winter. We do not have comparable manufacturer data to rank brands on defrost performance.

For Scottish or exposed sites, compare model-specific output tables and ask how defrost cycles, backup heating and hot-water demand are accounted for. For flats, terraces and restricted outdoor spaces, check the actual unit dimensions, manufacturer clearances, refrigerant safety zones and access for servicing. There is no universal clearance that applies to every heat pump. The installer should also assess noise at neighbouring properties. Options to discuss include:

Compare Net Cost After the Grant

Compare quotations for the same property and design. Subtract the grant you qualify for from the full eligible installation cost, then include any extras excluded from the quote. There is no defensible brand-wide cheapest option without comparable fitted quotations.

The current BUS grant for eligible air-to-water installations in England and Wales is £7,500. Until March 2027, an additional £1,500 is available where the property is heated by oil or LPG and has no mains gas connection. Your installer should confirm the applicable amount.
