ISO Certification Costs UK: What You’ll Really Pay

ISO certification in the UK costs anywhere from £995 plus VAT for an online certificate to five figures for a UKAS-accredited audit of a larger business. That spread is not a pricing trick. It reflects two genuinely different products: a fast online certificate issued without accredited oversight, and an accredited certification built on formal Stage 1 and Stage 2 audits. This guide separates the two, shows the published prices that exist, and explains why most of the market will only quote once it knows your headcount.

How Much Does ISO Certification Cost in the UK?

UK ISO certification pricing follows two models. Online certification providers publish fixed prices: ISO Accelerator charges £995 plus VAT for ISO 9001 or ISO 14001, £1,295 plus VAT for ISO 27001, and £2,295 plus VAT for all three, with renewal at £295 to £495 plus VAT each year. These certificates are not UKAS-accredited, and the provider’s own accreditation statement limits its online process to organisations of 25 employees or fewer. UKAS-accredited certification bodies such as BSI, NQA, Amtivo and ISOQAR publish no prices at all. They quote each business individually, because accredited audit time is set by your employee count, complexity and number of sites. Indicatively, a small UK business certifying one standard typically sees first-year totals of £3,000 to £7,000 including consultancy support, and an SME £5,000 to £10,000.

Those two numbers are not versions of the same product at different prices. Which one your business needs depends almost entirely on who is asking you for the certificate, which is where most buyers should start, not with the price list. Published Prices vs Quote-Based Pricing

Only one provider in the set we checked publishes a full rate card. Everyone else prices by quote. That is not evasiveness; accredited bodies are required to scale audit time to your organisation, so they cannot print one number that is true for every buyer.

What Drives an Accredited Certification Quote

An accredited ISO certification quote is built from audit days multiplied by the certification body’s day rate, plus any consultancy you buy to get ready. The audit-day count is not negotiable salesmanship: accredited bodies determine audit duration from your employee headcount, complexity and site count under IAF MD 5, the international mandatory document governing audit time. That is why a 4-person consultancy and a 90-person manufacturer receive very different quotes for the same standard, and why every certification enquiry form, including ours, asks for your employee band first. Initial certification is delivered as two audits: Stage 1 reviews your documentation and readiness, Stage 2 assesses the management system in operation. The certificate then runs on a 3-year cycle with annual surveillance audits, each billed separately.

Headcount bands are worth understanding before you ask for prices, because quotes step up as you cross them:

• 1 to 4 employees – the minimum audit-day count applies; this is where the online route is also technically available.
• 5 to 10 employees – still small-audit territory; single-site service businesses get the leanest accredited quotes here.
• 11 to 49 employees – audit days step up, and most bodies will want more evidence of embedded processes.
• 50 to 100 employees – multi-day Stage 2 audits become normal, and internal preparation time becomes a real cost line.
• Over 100 employees – expect five-figure first-year totals and plan a formal project rather than a purchase.

Cost by Standard: 9001, 27001, 14001 and 45001

The standard you choose moves the price less than your headcount does, with one exception: information security. ISO 27001 quotes consistently sit above the others at the same company size, because the evidence base is broader and the auditor pool more specialist. Even the budget online route prices it £300 above ISO 9001.

Certifying two or three standards together costs less than certifying them separately, because integrated audits share time. On the published online card, ISO 9001 plus 14001 is £1,695 plus VAT rather than £1,990 bought separately, and all three are £2,295 plus VAT. Accredited bodies apply the same logic to integrated management system audits, though the saving arrives inside a quote rather than on a price list.

The Costs After Year One

ISO certification is a running cost, not a one-off purchase. On the accredited route, the certificate is valid for three years, but the certification body returns every year: surveillance audits in years two and three, then a recertification audit to start the next cycle. Each visit is billed at the body’s day rate, so the realistic budget is an annual line, not a single project figure. On the online route the model is simpler and shorter: ISO Accelerator certificates renew annually at £295 plus VAT for one standard, £395 for two and £495 for three. Internal costs continue on both routes, because someone has to run the management system, keep records audit-ready and close out findings between visits.

If the ongoing commitment is what gives you pause, that is worth taking seriously rather than suppressing. A management system that is maintained only in the fortnight before each surveillance audit costs nearly as much and delivers none of the operational value.

How to Keep the Cost Down

• Confirm what your customers actually require – if no tender or contract specifies UKAS-accredited certification, the online route saves thousands; if one does, the cheap certificate is wasted money.
• Get quotes from more than one accredited body – audit-day counts are rule-based but day rates and consultancy bundles are not, and bodies quote the same business differently.
• Scope the certificate tightly – certifying one site or one service line first reduces audit days; you can extend scope later.
• Separate consultancy from certification – the body that audits you should not also build your system; pricing them separately keeps both honest and is cleaner for accreditation rules.
• Prepare internally before Stage 1 – failed or repeated audit stages are billed; arriving ready is the cheapest optimisation available.
