UK ISO 9001 certification has one published price and a quote-based market around it. The published price is £995 plus VAT for an online certificate from ISO Accelerator, renewing at £295 plus VAT annually, with the provider’s own accreditation statement limiting the process to organisations of 25 employees or fewer and sitting outside UKAS accreditation. UKAS-accredited certification bodies publish no 9001 rate card. They build each quote from audit days, which are set by your employee count, complexity and number of sites under IAF MD 5 rules, plus whatever consultancy you buy to prepare. Accreditation rules push certification bodies away from auditing management systems they helped build. Buying consultancy and certification from unrelated firms is cleaner, and it keeps both prices visible instead of bundled into one number you cannot compare.

Employee headcount is the main input to an accredited ISO 9001 quote, because audit duration scales with it under IAF MD 5. A business with 1 to 4 employees sits at the minimum audit-day count and gets the leanest quotes, and is also the size band where the online route is technically available. From 5 to 10 employees, accredited quotes remain modest for a single site. Between 11 and 49 employees, audit days step up and most bodies expect fuller process evidence, which is also where consultancy hours grow. From 50 to 100 employees, multi-day Stage 2 audits are standard and internal preparation becomes the biggest hidden cost. Above 100 employees, certification behaves like a formal project with five-figure first-year budgets. Quotes step at band boundaries, so knowing your band before you ask stops a mid-band business being priced as a larger one.
Ongoing Costs: The 3-Year Cycle
An accredited 9001 certificate is valid for three years, with the certification body returning annually: surveillance audits in years two and three, then a full recertification audit to open the next cycle. Each visit is billed separately, so the honest way to budget is an annual running cost rather than a one-off fee. The online route inverts this: cheaper upfront at £995 plus VAT, but renewing every year at £295 plus VAT, so its three-year cost is closer to its accredited-looking headline than the first invoice suggests.
Run the arithmetic before choosing on price alone: three years on the online route is £995 plus two £295 renewals, £1,585 plus VAT in total, against an accredited route that buys you standing in tenders that specify accreditation. Which of those is better value depends entirely on who will be reading your certificate.
How to Pay Less for ISO 9001
- Check the tender wording first – if UKAS accreditation is not required by any customer, the online route saves thousands; if it is, only accredited quotes are worth collecting.
- Quote at least two accredited bodies – the audit-day count is rule-based and should match; differences in the total are day rates and bundling, which you can push on.
- Start with one site – multi-site certification multiplies audit days; certify head office first and extend scope later.
- Do the documentation yourself where you can – 9001 is the most template-friendly of the major standards, and every procedure you draft in-house is a consultancy hour you do not buy.
