Siemens’ New Wind Turbine Commercial is Pretty Badass (video)

Siemens’ latest commercial for their extreme wind turbine program combines dramatic, computer-generated camera angles, swooping visuals, and an epic soundtrack that might be more appropriate for a summer blockbuster if, you know, Siemens weren’t out there actually trying to save the world with their cheap, clean, non-polluting power. The kind of “save the world” thing that clean power providers do every day, in other words. Projects like the massive wind turbines shown in this commercial, Siemens hopes, will help reduce…

South Korea to Build Largest Offshore Wind Farm (in World)

South Korea is a definite cleantech leader. Its cleantech investments per GDP are many, many times more than the US’, or any other country’s I’m aware of. Check out the graphics below on percentage of countries’ stimulus packages that went towards green technology — South Korea is the last pie.

Romania Home to Large, New Wind Energy Hub

Vestas is the world’s leading manufacturer of wind turbines. There are 41,000 Vestas wind turbines in 65 countries around the world, creating approximately 20,000 jobs. Together, they cut CO2 emissions by about 40 million tons every year. Vestas knows wind energy. It recently decided that it would locate its Eastern European wind energy hub in Romania. That means two things: 1) Romania is ripe for some serious wind energy growth, and 2) the country will be sure to get the…

Obama State of the Union Address 2011 [VIDEO]

Obama’s 2011 State of the Union address (full text) is important to us all because it is not only a critical reflection on where we stand today, but also on where we’re going, where we need to go, and how we can succeed as a nation (all according to our President and his team, the people with the most power concerning this matter… or who should have the most power concerning this matter). Here are my reflections (and the…

Africa Getting its First Giant Wind Farm

Four Cape Verde islands have just been granted funding to build Africa’s first giant wind farm. The project is being considered a model for other African countries. The European Investment Bank (EIB) and African Development Bank (AfDB) agreed last week to give 45 million euros ($62.84 million) “to design, build, and operate” this onshore wind energy project. The EIB will provide two-thirds of that and the ADB the other one third. The total project cost is 65 million euros, so…

Largest Offshore Wind Farm in World Completed in UK

Since I’m on a renewable energy in Europe kick this week, thought I’d share one more piece of good news. The largest offshore wind farm in the world was launched in the UK last week. This $1.2 billion wind farm, called the Thanet Offshore Wind Farm, consists of 100 V90 wind turbines from Danish wind energy giant Vestas. These wind turbines will create enough power for 200,000 homes (300 MW of power). They increase the UK’s wind energy capacity 30% and…

Denmark & Germany Next to Announce Big Renewable Energy Targets & Possibilities

Yes, more European countries are showing that they are very serious about addressing climate change, while the U.S. does,.. well,.. not much. It was just the other I wrote about Northern Ireland and Scotland‘s big renewable energy targets. I’ve got more good news out of Europe. Germany’s 2050 Renewable Energy Target — 60% Germany, has set a goal of getting 60% of energy from renewable resources by 2050. While a study from the Federal Environment Agency a few months ago…

Scotland Aiming for 100% Clean Energy by 2025

While the U.S. may aim for a 15% Renewable Energy Standard by 2021, and Northern Ireland has just confirmed a much stronger target of 40% renewable energy by 2020, Scotland is aiming a bit higher. It announced today that it plans to get “at least” 100% of its energy from renewable sources by 2025. Wow. “Scotland has unrivalled green energy resources and our new national target to generate 80 percent of electricity needs from renewables by 2020 will be exceeded…

Northern Ireland Plans to Hit 40% Renewable Energy by 2020

While the U.S. Congress is looking to set a low bar of 15% renewable energy by 2021, Northern Ireland is looking to do much more, aiming for 40% renewable energy by 2020. Northern Ireland’s Assembly government approved this target yesterday. The country is reportedly producing 10% of its energy from renewable sources right now. In order to meet its goal of quadrupling that in 10 years, Northern Ireland is planning to put £1 billion ($1.58) into grid improvements. This is quite…

First Net-Zero Affordable Community! But…

There’s an exciting announcement out this week — the “first net-zero affordable community” is supposed to break ground on September 14th in Jerseyville, IL. It looks like a wonderful project in that 32 single-family homes renting for only $590 per month will be powered by solar panels, wind turbines and other clean technology, keeping utility bills at $0. Furthermore, the homes are expected to be LEED Platinum certified once they are completed. No small feat there. “Cutting edge green renewable technology…

Bicycle City

The first Bicycle City is finally getting built! More on that and how Bicycle City got started via co-founder Joe Mellet below. I have seen advertisements for Bicycle City for years now. I remember when it first got started — it looked like a great initiative but was rather mysterious. “Where was “bicycle city” or where would bicycle cities be?” was the question on numerous bicycle enthusiasts’ and city planners’ minds. The Bicycle City website built up a stronger and…

New Jersey Set to Boost Its Wind Power

The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities is expected to vote next week on a $19 million plan to generate 350 megawatts of electricity with nearly 300 new wind turbines to be installed at various offshore locations. One part of Gov. Jon S. Corzine’s Energy Master Plan for the state, the wind turbine plan could make New Jersey the first state in the U.S. to get energy from offshore wind (though that distinction could still go to Delaware, which OK’d…
