Gun Control: Senator Feinstein Calls for Renewal of US Assault Weapons Ban

Senator Feinstein

Today Senator Dianne Feinstein announced that she will introduce a bill to ban assault weapons on the first day of the new Congress. The California Democrat said that it was past time to once again outlaw these deadly weapons of war (our federal gun regulation had initially been implemented during the Clinton Administration, but expired in 2004). Feinstein explained that she and her fellow politicians had been working on the reform for a year, the gun control bill was not a direct response to the horrific Newtown massacre.

Renewing our nation’s assault weapons law will outlaw military style AK-47s and semi-automatic rifles, as well as extended ammunition clips, drums or strips of more than 10 bullets. While speaking on Meet the Press, Feinstein highlighted some details about the legislation:

“I am going to introduce in the Senate, and the same bill will be introduced in the House, a bill to ban assault weapons. It will ban the sale, the transfer, the importation and the possession [of assault weapons], not retroactively, but prospectively…the purpose of this bill is to get weapons of war off the streets.”

In 1978, then Supervisor Dianne Feinstein was the first person to discover the brutally murdered bodies of her colleagues, George Moscone and Harvey Milk; she went on to succeed Moscone as the mayor of San Francisco, and has continued to be a vocal gun control advocate.
